Note that I don't currently have a page on the bash shell because there is so much to cover. But the bash shell is a superset of the POSIX shell, so everything I have on this page applies to bash as well. Learn this first and get a gggood foundation on the basics that apply to nearly all shells.
For beginners, the first thing you should study is how and why quotation marks are so important, and how to use them. So I recommend my tutorial on Shell Quotes first.

- Regular Expressions - Originally written for Solaris/Unix, so your milage my vary. But the lessons are still useful.
- Grep - the global/regular expression/print command - Find strings and regular expresisons in one or more files.
- SED - The Stream Editor - Editing a data stream. Google rates this page very highly.
- POSIX Shells - The basics of POSIX compatible shells (including bash)
- AWK - The basic power tool for UNIX.
- Bourne Shell - Everything you wanted to know about the older Bourne shell.
- Make - Combining Make and shell scripts. NEW
- Unix/Linux permissons - chmod, umask and the works.
- Csh - The C shell - warts and all. But before you read that, perhaps you want to look at the next two essays:
